1

1976

  • Al Qassimi Hospital was the first government hospital in UAE to be managed by an International Healthcare Management Company. This 120 bed hospital, providing general acute services was equipped, commissioned and subsequently managed by Allied Medical (UME Group company) for a period of 10 years.

1977

  • United Medical (UME Group company) was awarded The Riyadh Al Kharj Military Hospital Programme in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This involved the commissioning and management of three hospitals, totalling approximately 800 beds, together with approximately 30 primary healthcare clinics, spread over a radius of 80 kilometres. UME successfully recruited 4000 employees and controlled a budget in excess of £150 million annually. The contract lasted for seven years after which management responsibility was handed over to the government; part of our responsibility was to train local managers during handover.

1984

  • United Medical, was awarded the largest turnkey hospital management contract ever granted by the Saudi Government. This included a 350 bed acute hospital in Tabuk and two 300 bed hospitals and 20 clinics in Khamis Mushrit. Subsequently two further contracts were awarded - Wadi Dawasir (100 bed) and the management of the King Fahd Armed Forces Hospital in Jeddah (250 bed).

1994

  • Guy's Nuffield House, Guy's & St. Thomas' Hospitals NHS Trust, London - UME funded the construction of a 42 bed private patients' unit and managed it on behalf of the trust for a period of eight years. The unit provided clinical services, including two theatre suites, outpatients, day case and consulting facilities

1996

  • The UME Group conceived and developed the privatisation programme for the provision of non-clinical support services to127 hospital and healthcare facilities across Malaysia. A joint venture between United Medical and local partner, Faber Group Berhad was set up to deliver FM, biomedical engineering, laundry and clinical waste management to 71 hospitals, under a fifteen year concession. United Medical is technical advisor to the JV company.

1997

  • UME was instrumental in the development of the UK PFI healthcare sector proposition. Our experience in this field has allowed us to develop capabilities to export UK standards of healthcare to a wider international audience

2000

  • Opened a new 120 bed acute medical unit in Glasgow for the elderly and mentally ill. The UME Group were co-investors and undertook the commissioning for the unit.
  • Darent Valley Hospital - The first major healthcare PFI project to be completed in the UK. UME were co sponsor, investor, PFI company manager and provider of specialist services. Three hospitals were amalgamated into one, on budget and on time. Winner of the PFM Award for Best Relocation programme.
  • Kingdom Hospital in Riyadh opened providing a wide range of acute and non acute primary and secondary clinical services. The construction programme allowed for staged expansion to 170 beds. The hospital introduced a fully automated HMIS, complete with electronic medical record, billing system integrated to Oracle Back Office and a state of the art imaging centre.

2001

  • Harplands Hospital North, a new 150 bed mental health facility in Staffordshire. The UME Group were co-sponsor, investor, PFI company manager and provider of specialist services including commissioning and equipment supply.
  • Opened Muscat Private Hospital a 78 bed acute private hospital in Oman.

2002

  • Managed Equipment Service at Princess Royal University Hospital, Bromley. A groundbreaking deal resulting in UME supplying the first fully managed equipment service under a PFI structure.
  • Great Western Hospital, a new 500 bed hospital in Swindon. The UME Group were joint sponsor of the hospital company, as well as investor, PFI company manager and provider of specialist services including commissioning. Winner of the HSJ Management Award for Partnership with Industry.

2004

  • LIFT project. The UME Group were co-sponsor and investor in Citycare which is leading a scheme to replace ageing GP surgeries with state-of the-art health centres.
  • Great Western Hospital, a new 500 bed hospital in Swindon. The UME Group were joint sponsor of the hospital company, as well as investor, PFI company manager and provider of specialist services including commissioning. Winner of the HSJ Management Award for Partnership with Industry.

2005

  • Wharfedale Locality Hospital, Leeds, the UME Group were co-sponsor and investor as well as health planner for the project.
  • Opening of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, the UME Group were co-sponsor, investor, PFI company manager and provider of commissioning. This redevelopment won a PFI best design award in 2003

2006

  • Opening of the New Nicosia General Hospital. UME group were responsible for the commissioning and equipping of this 500-bed tertiary teaching hospital in the capital of Cyprus.
  • Opening of the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, a 168 hospital for which the UME Group acted as investor and co-sponsor.
  • New4Old, Social Housing Scheme, Croydon. This will provide Croydon with four new centres and includes 150 residential and nursing places, 40 extra care flats and 128 day care places. The UME Group are co-sponsor and investor for this project.
  • Mid Argyll Community Hospital, Lochgilphead opened. The UME Group were co-sponsor and investor and provided equipping services to the consortium

2007

  • Financial close reached on Young Herts PFI. This scheme entails the provision and maintenance of children's homes and family support centres across fourteen sites in Hertfordshire. UME provides the project management, is co-sponsor and 75% investor. Winner of Best Community / User Involvement category at 2008 PPF Awards.
  • UME opened its 15th PFI scheme with the NHS at Walkergate Park for Neuro Rehabilitation and Neuropsychiatry, Newcastle. The UME Group were co-sponsor and investor as well as providing health planning and equipment services for the project
